The Early Years

In 1900, a devastating fire ravaged the St. Jean’s Block on French Hill in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and with it, Cormier’s Drug Store—where Joseph A. Bouvier, the son of French immigrants, had honed his skills in pharmacy. When the store’s owner chose to retire, Joseph, rather than lamenting the loss of his job, saw an opportunity. He ventured out on his own, establishing the first Bouvier Pharmacy on Lincoln Street.

The Bouvier Philosophy is Born

Joseph’s commitment to his community was unwavering. Through the hardships of the Great Depression, he not only provided vital services but also extended credit to those in need, trusting that his customers would pay when they were able. His reputation for personal, compassionate service laid the foundation for what would become a family legacy. His son Alfred and daughter Violet would later join him in the business, continuing his tradition of care and dedication.

History of Bouvier Pharmacy

Community Expansion

The 1950s brought a period of expansion, with Alfred and Violet leading the charge. In 1952, they built the present-day pharmacy on Lincoln Street in Marlborough, and in 1955, they acquired Carney’s Corner Drug Store on O’Grady’s Block at 44 Main Street, further solidifying the Bouvier name in the community.

A Family Affair

The 1960s marked the beginning of the third generation’s involvement, with four of Alfred’s sons Alfred Jr., Noel, Philippe and Tom joining the family business. In 1975, they acquired McCook’s Pharmacy, and shortly thereafter, they launched Surgical Pharmacy, a venture focused on providing medical supplies to doctors’ offices and hospitals. Also, adding a store in Lunenburg, MA.

As the years passed, Alfred Sr. continued to work alongside his sons until his retirement in 1990. Philippe Bouvier, one of his sons, would go on to lead the business until his own retirement in 2015.

125 Years of Service

Today, Bouvier Pharmacy stands as a testament to 125 years of service. With nearly 30 employees, it serves 51 cities and towns across Central Massachusetts, but its heart remains at 515 Lincoln Street. The business is now owned and operated by Brian Bouvier, the fourth generation of the Bouvier family. And though times have changed, the spirit of service that Joseph Bouvier began in 1900 continues through the family. David Bouvier manages the medical equipment department, while Roberta Bouvier oversees the billing department, ensuring that the legacy of personal care and community service endures.
